Five Reasons To Visit Lanzarote
The small Canary Island of Lanzarote has long been a big favourite with tourists. Attracting 1.5 million foreign visitors during the course of 2008 alone. The majority from the UK and Ireland. And local tourist authorities estimate that at least 40% of visitors return to the island for a second holiday. So what is the secret of Lanzarote´s attraction?
Climate & Weather
The key to Lanzarote´s popularity lies in the islands location just off the coast of Saharan West Africa, close to the Tropic of Capricorn. A privileged position that creates a very clement climate all year round. Which is often likened to an eternal Spring.
Lanzarote is just four hours flying time from the UK – so the island, along with the other Canaries, is the closest genuine winter sun destination for northern Europeans. And in the UK a number of low cost operators service the island – creating a ready availability of low cost flights to Lanzarote.
Good Quality Accommodation
Lanzarote has been welcoming tourists for over forty years. Ever since the package holiday industry first took off on the island in and around the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Which is still the most popular destination on Lanzarote today.
As a result, accommodation standards on the island are high. With the best hotels in Lanzarote concentrated in the southern resort of Playa Blanca, which lies just 8km across the Bocaina Straits from the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.
Many visitors prefer to book self catering accommodation – and apartments and villas in Lanzarote are very popular as a result. The bulk of which are concentrated in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.
Great Beaches
Lanzarote boasts over ninety great beaches. Each of the main resorts has a number of fine stretches of sand but the best beaches on the island can be found at Papagayo in the south of the island and Famara in the north. Where visitors can enjoy a huge 8km beach, flanked by the impressive sight of the Famara massif range of cliffs.
Natural Wonders
During the 1730´s Lanzarote was subjected to a six year long volcanic eruption. This carpeted large swathes of the island in lava. Destroying arable land and forcing many slanders to emigrate.
Today, Lanzarote is renowned for its unique volcanic beauty. And the Timanfaya Volcano Park, which lay at the centre of these eruptions, is now the most popular visitor attraction on the island.
Hail Cesar
Lanzarote also boasts some incredible man made sites too. Thanks to the work of the locally born artist Cesar Manrique. Who fused the volcanic scenery of Lanzarote with his own artistic aesthetic to create a series of seven tourist attractions. The best known of which is the Jameos del Agua. Where he transformed a collapsed lava tube into an underground auditorium and nightclub.
