Vallelunga: 15min walk from Villa Caterina A small town around an ancient storehouse already existed here in the 16th c., when it was a domain of the Notarbartolo family. The present town was founded in 1633 with licentia populandi. Its name Vallelunga Pratameno (“Longvalley Fairmeadow”) is attractive and makes one curious to visit it. The best attraction is the 1600’s Mother Church dedicated to the Madonna di Loreto – the Patron Saint – in the city heart, that is Piazza Umberto I. The church has an imposing façade with two bell-towers and battlement. Its three naves are adorned with fine pieces of art, like the 1600’s statue of the Madonna di Loreto, a splendid painting depicting the Madonna del Rosario and statues of the Virgin and Saint Joseph. The now closed Oratorio del Signore and the 1700’s church of the Holy Rosary are also worthy of note.A fascinating overview of old rural life is offered at the Museo della Civiltà Contadina (museum of the rural life), harboring beautifully detailed reconstructions of rural homes and artisan’s workshops. The city environs are home to impressing naturalistic sites, such as the Collina di Tanarizzi and the Regaleali estate; the latter is property of the Counts Tasca d’Almerita, its vines having contributed to producing most prestigious Sicilian wines. Caltanissetta: 45min.drive from Villa Caterina Mussomeli: 40mins, Agrigento: 1hr Cefalu : 1hr

Mussomeli:The Castello dei Chiaromonte, built in 1370 in Gothic-Norman style, stands in majestic solitude on a high and rugged crag, alt. 778 m, 2 km outside the town, on the provincial road to Villalba. The castle contains vast halls, dungeons and torture cells, and the fine chapel with a precious alabaster Madonna della Catena (1516). The outstandingly vast extent of the surrounding fief can be appreciated from the windows of the Castle. The fief, as it still seems to be today, is dominated from afar by the awesome presence of the lonely castle. The ruins of a Graeco-Italic village can be seen near the castle. Caltanissetta:This city in central Sicily is identified with ancient Nissa, and natives of Caltanissetta are called nisseni. It is about 568 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount San Giuliano overlooking the Salso River Valley. There are traces of both Sicanian and Greek villages at Caltanissetta. The former dates from about 600 BC.[Caltanissetta is approx. 40min. drive from Villa Caterina, So why not visit and Explore] Approx. 1hrs drive from Villa Caterina you will discover Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples.A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest legacies of ancient Greece. This parade of well-preserved Doric temples, just outside town, dates back to the fifth century BC and is what remains of the Greek city of Akragas. The small town Cefalù is 1hr from villa Caterina, and is really worth a visit! Cefalù is a picturesque fishing village that enjoys a splendid position between the sea and a rocky promontory. The town’s current name derives from the Greek word Kephaloidion, meaning head or chief, and the town saw its heyday under the Norman king Roger II, who decided to initiate the work on the cathedral in 1131. The town is divided in two parts; an old part that is mainly for pedestrians and has many nice little boutiques, and a new modern part with supermarkets, gas stations and car rentals. Corso Ruggero is the main street in the old town center, and it has many different shops and in cross-streets you will find many good restaurants. The old town center is dominated by the cathedral and the Rock rising in the background. The town’s history is chequered; many different kinds of people have governed it, for example the Arabs, the Greeks and the Normans. The historical heritage is reflected in architecture, location and the atmosphere.
